It was my second daughter’s birthday! So, the first order of business that Sunday morning, was to send her birthday greetings in the family chat.

As previously planned, my husband, son, and I made our way to Hope City Presbyterian Church, where the pastor’s last name was Wesley. We had our eye on that church all week because it was located right across the street from the Airbnb where we were staying; very convenient, I might add.

Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter. Lent is a period of reflection. Christians are fasting and praying. We see this as a time to give up something or give back something. Each year, Christians find new and innovative ways to observe Lent. And some Christians observe the traditional fast for the 40 days, having only water or juice as sustenance.

Love is in the air. Romantic love. Everyone must be talking about it. After all, it is February. It doesn’t matter whether you are in love, out of love, or looking for love; you have an opinion. The new romcom movies are hitting the screens. The stores are filled with gifts and mementos meant to tickle the fancy of young and old alike. But the noise of the day dampens the joy that usually washes over us this time of year.

Needing a word from God? Then, when that word is given, what do we do? Do we recognize the timeliness of the gift? He is precious. He has a mighty voice. His touch is tender. God is the very essence of peace. God repeatedly gives to us. If we need a word from God and do not get a word from God, what can we do? What will we do?

Perhaps it’s the senses evoked by Autumn and a mind bent towards leaves blowing in the wind that have me thinking of things that swirl. Or maybe it’s the fact that I turned another year older on Thanksgiving, and the years seemed to have just miraculously swirled away. Nevertheless, it’s Christmas time, and everywhere I look, I see signs of cheer. The air is full of the aromas of the season.

They will know we are Christians by our love. Really?
Thanksgiving is celebrated this month. But too many leaders everywhere, in every walk of life, seem to be going astray. The White House is not the only place where leaders are wreaking havoc. Wasn't the United States already having way too many people starving? Did we really need another shutdown stalemate where either side refuses to feed people when it is within their means to do so?

Deciding about a devotion sometimes requires thought, meditative prayer, and conversation. This month was one of those times. I was finally able to put pen to paper after my weekly Bible Chat with my eight grandchildren. We chatted about times when God asks us to wait for something good while something bad is happening.

To parents: Thank you for all the time, energy, and love that has been poured into our children. To children: Remember, each of you has a fresh start. This is a new opportunity to do great things.

I believe we all have goals and things we need to get done. What’s first on your list, though?
What is on our to-do list: Go to work, help the children, pick up a gift for your spouse, visit the sick, learn a new video game, or go to a sleepover? What is on your list of goals: Finish high school, learn to knit, read the Bible, write, learn to bake, learn to skate or ride your bike, or get first chair in the orchestra? What is on your list?
Here is a thought I heard one day: “Aspire to do something so large that a relationship with God is the only way you can hope to accomplish it.” Then I read Psalm 20:

Am I my brother’s keeper? Our answer should be a resounding yes! Once in a while, we need to stop beating around the bush. Sometimes, easing folks into hearing the truth does more harm than good. All this hesitation enables society to remain off track. Every once in a while, we have to hit it on the head, point directly to the problem or issue at hand, and nail that thing to the cross by the empowering message that resides within the one-word answer, yes. No room for debate or deliberation. Am I my brother’s keeper? Yes. Yes you are. And, when you dare to think you are not, you too will find yourself (just like Cain) hopelessly and aimlessly roaming around from place to place with the mark of God telling the world do not kill.

God rewards children with long lives when they honor their parents. Children will not stray far from parents who have trained them properly. Parents train. Children honor. What does obey have to do with it? Meditating on this devotion may provide a glimpse into how Jesus intended you to train your children to show honor.
